This scene still breaks my heart each and every single time I watch it.
Azula was a terrible, horrible person. She would have set the world aflame and laughed over the broken carcass of her brother.
But she was fourteen.
She was so ruined and twisted by her childhood and by her nation, driven to insanity by the expectations placed upon her.
Azula was bad and yet I can’t help but feel so terribly sorry for her.
“I don’t have sob stories like all of you.”
SHE WAS FUCKING FOURTEEN WHAT
“My own mother….thought I was a monster.
She was right, of course, but it still hurt.”actually, i think one of the shows strengths is that they didn’t shy away from what a horrible tragedy this was. even though she was clearly a villain and did unspeakably awful things, this scene was still framed as sad. there was no celebrating- they just look at her sadly.
the music for the battle that leads up to this moment is sad too- it’s an epic battle, visually probably one of the biggest things done in the entire series, and they could have played it with thumping, energetic, dangerous music. but instead it’s quiet and somber. because the whole scenario is heartbreaking, and they know it.
i think the fact that a kid’s show had so much respect for it’s viewers and their ability to understand the complexity of this situation is what makes avatar great.
This and the last Agni Kai are the most tragic scenes of the whole series (imho).
Just so we’re clear: fic writers do not have to be happy about, or thankful for, criticism from random people on the internet whose opinion they have no reason to trust.
We have betas and writers networks for that
Please don’t critique someone’s writing and expect gratitude. Some people will welcome it, others will not. It’s always better to ask if the writer wants feedback first.
Thank you.

This is a really heartfelt essay about my use of trigger warnings in the classroom. If you could give it a look or share it around, I’d really appreciate it. Too many academics and adminstrators think trigger warnings are a sign of intellectual weakness and fear. Really, they’re a tool that protects students and gives them strength. Help me spread the word.

did you know that in 1953 eisenhower issued an executive order which banned gay people from being employed in government and it was specifically to root out lesbians who enjoyed the job security of government work
“To protect their careers, lesbian government workers moderated their behavior to avoid suspicion. They refused to socialize with other lesbians in public, attended social functions with gay men as their ‘dates,’ and carefully chose their wardrobes and makeup to project a feminine persona. Male employees who resented reporting to a female boss could trigger an investigation into her sexuality.” - Robert J Corber “Cold War Femme”
this era was called the lavender scare and was both a direct result of mccarthyism and the classification of homosexuality as a mental illness during ww2. over 10,000 lesbians and gay men lost their jobs and as a result the daughters of bilitis (the first ever lesbian activist group in the u.s.) formed in order to protect themselves and gay men
